This painting is part of a series of images I made based on tiny antique lead figures. The little cow figure is only 1.75" tall but has a presence that far exceeds his humble size. I have a collection of tiny people and animals like this which were made primarily in England and France nearly a hundred years ago. My favorites are like this one--paint chipped and worn, showing the traces of little hands from long ago. I set this guy up on the shiny white enamel surface of my dryer and painted it large. He turned out looking so real, as if he's walking across a plain near a puddle of water. I love the illusion and the way his right front hoof hovers above the surface. It's a small detail that, along with the chipped paint, tells the story of his unreality. Go check him out at: https://bit.ly/35Nfq10
